About the APL Trust
Our Mission
The APL Trust is a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness of the APL programming language and supporting its use around the world. By funding research, education, and practical applications, we help APL ideas grow into tools that benefit both people and technology.
Our Plans
The APL Trust is at the beginning of its journey.
Our long-term goal is to build a sustainable source of funding for the APL community, ensuring that the language continues to thrive and inspire generations to come.
Help Build New Tools and Resources
Fund the creation of new APL tools, libraries, and teaching resources to expand what the community can do.
Advance Research with APL
Support scientific and mathematical research projects where APL can make a real and lasting impact.
Bring APL into Education
Help educators introduce APL in the classroom as a fresh way for students to approach problem-solving.
Expand Global Participation
Establish additional Trust organisations around the world to enable wider global participation.
Our History
The idea for the APL Trust was first announced in October 2023 at the Dyalog User Meeting by Gitte Christensen then Dyalog Ltd’s CEO. She called for a way for those who have benefited from APL to “pay it forward”, enabling future generations to discover and build with APL.
It was determined that in order for donations to be tax-deductible, each jurisdiction would need its own independent charitable organization.
In October 2024, a group of five US-based APL enthusiasts with a collective APL experience of over 200 years combined efforts to turn the idea into reality. A Board of Directors was formed consisting of Diane Hymas, Bob Smith, Jay Whipple, Mark Wolfson, and Brian Becker.
On December 11, 2024, The APL Trust Inc. was incorporated in the state of West Virginia.
On September 10, 2025, The APL Trust Inc. was approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
Looking Ahead
Additional APL Trust organizations are planned in other regions such as the UK, EU, and Denmark.
